The New U-Tower in Dortmund: A Symbol for Culture and Creativity
Dortmund has transformed one of its most symbolical pieces of architecture: The former tower of the Union-Brewery, also known as ‘Dortmund’s U’, has been inaugurated yesterday as a Center for Culture and Creativity.
There is a huge video-installation – called “Fliegende Bilder” (“Flying Images”) by Adolf Winkelmann – installed around the top of the building that wants to represent the identity of the Ruhr Area – whatever that might be – and the structural change of its geographic and cultural landscape.
Several museums, universities and cultural institutions are hosted in the new center, among them the renown HartwareMedienkunstVerein.

Ruhr2010: Open Light In Private Spaces
Seit einigen Wochen findet im östlichen Ruhrgebiet eine Biennale der besonderen Art statt: 60 Lichtkunst-Exponate werden in verschiedensten Wohnungen und Räumlichkeiten von Privatpersonen ausgestellt.
Die dezentrale Ausstellung orientiert sich geografisch um das Internationale Lichtkunstmuseum Unna und findet an Orten in Unna, Bönen, Bergkamen, Fröndenberg und Lünen statt. Gezeigt werden Werke von Künstlern wie Olafur Eliasson, James Turrell und Mischa Kuball aber auch weniger bekannten Namen.
Den besonderen Reiz machen indes nicht unbedingt die Objekte selbst aus, sondern vielmehr die unterschiedlichsten Kontexte, in denen diese verortet sind. So befindet sich beispielsweise der Licht gewordene Spruch “DER SOZIALISMUS SIEGT” von Via Lewandowsky im Tapetenlager der Firma Standop in Bönen, einem Familienunternehmen mit langjähriger FDP-Mitgliedschaft.
